Contacting Jury Service
Jury Service in the UK is an important part of the UK justice system. Jurors are chosen from their local communities. The jury pool in a given community is made up of those who are 18-69 years of age and are also registered voters. The pool also includes those who have lived in the UK for at least five years for any period after the age of thirteen. Some people, such as those with certain mental health issues or those who have been in prison at any point during the past ten years, cannot serve on a jury. If an individual is summoned for Jury Service and is not excused, he or she can face a fine of 1,000 pounds for not appearing.
People who have received a jury summons form should contact the Jury Service office if they are unable to serve on the dates for which they have been summoned and would like to ask for a deferral of their service. Those who believe they will not be able to serve at any time during the twelve months following their summons can apply for forbearance. Jurors can contact the Jury Service office if they have questions about where or when to report for service or about accessibility arrangements.
