Contacting Inland Revenue
HM Revenue and Customs, or HMRC, are responsible for collecting all tax that is owed to the government of the United Kingdom by individuals and businesses, and ensuring that the right amount of tax is paid on imports into the country. They were established in 2005, replacing the two separate organisations, the Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise. The money that is collected by them on behalf of the Government is used for public spending, on hospitals and schools for example. They report directly to Parliament through the Treasury Minister.
There are a number of reasons why you might need to contact HMRC. You may have a query about your tax code that you want resolved in order to ensure you are paying the right amount of tax on your income. If you have received a notice that you have not paid enough tax, then you may want to make a payment arrangement so that you can pay the tax that you owe. If you own a business then you may have queries about the rate of corporation tax that you should be paying, or how much VAT is due. Customer services can also help with any questions about self assessment.
